WHO IT MAY SUIT

Civil contractors, landscapers, trades, equipment owners and businesses that own, hire in or hire out mobile plant.

The right structure depends on machine type, value, finance, work locations, attachments, road use, dry or wet hire and the liability exposure created by its operation.

PRACTICAL COVER REVIEW

The machine, attachments and operating exposure should be reviewed together.

A bucket, auger, GPS system or trailer can be essential to the machine but omitted from the schedule. Accurate descriptions and values reduce uncertainty after a loss.

01

Schedule

Record serial numbers, attachments, accessories, finance and realistic replacement or market values.

02

Use

Disclose excavation, demolition, underground work, forestry, mining or other higher-hazard activities.

03

Liability

Check whether operation, road use, dry hire and wet hire are addressed by the correct policy sections.

WHY THE DETAILS MATTER

Plant losses often involve more than the base machine.

List attachments separately

Buckets, forks, grabs, hammers, GPS units and other attachments may need their own values. Photographs, invoices and serial numbers help establish what was insured.

Understand theft conditions

Immobilisers, locked compounds, key controls, GPS tracking and overnight storage may be conditions of cover or influence the excess.

Coordinate registered and unregistered use

Road liability, compulsory insurance and general liability can interact differently depending on registration and where the plant is operating.

Consider hire exposures

Hired-in plant may create contractual responsibilities, while hiring equipment to others changes control and operator exposure. Dry and wet hire should be disclosed.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions about plant & equipment insurance.

These answers are general. The quotation, schedule and policy wording determine the cover offered.

Are buckets and attachments automatically included?

Not always. They should be identified and valued, particularly when interchangeable or stored separately from the machine.

Can hired-in plant be covered?

Many products can include hired-in plant, subject to limits and contractual conditions. The hire agreement should be reviewed.

Does plant insurance include public liability?

Some packages include liability sections, but own-damage and liability are distinct covers. Road use and compulsory requirements need separate attention.

How should older plant be valued?

The policy may use market value, agreed value or another basis. Recent comparable sales, valuations, condition and attachments can assist.
